Visual Lexicon | Entry 01 | The Gathering
A Library of shapes
The Library is an ongoing study of mark making, and shapes, shaping stories through documentation and recordings.
Developed to collate the shapes of the patterns we've developed along the years, to record new marks imagined, to hold the stories from history and the ones shaping us forward. It is our answer to developing a visual language and system that is synonymous to who we are.
The Study Asks a simple question "how do African symbols evolve to become new narratives combining shapes meaning and storytelling?" and thus serves as a living archive method of research and study which sits at the intersection of lived black experience, memory and historic African textile principles of mark-making.
Shapes & Meaning
An introduction to some of the shapes explored to construct The Gathering pattern. A pattern that holds multiple expresssions in translations.
Each shape carries its own language, drawing from memory, history and the many ways in which stories are translated into visual expressions.
Through the arrangement, interaction and repetition, individual shapes find new meaning, revealing the stroy, revealing the traces of inspiration and design structures informed in its composition forming a collective composition that holds multiple expressions within a single pattern.
