Jamila from our Azania collection takes inspiration from Ancient African hairstyles which in many tribes / clans was a symbol of social status, and background. The collection explores the transition of African culture specifically hair culture into the modern day contemporary space. Celebrating how women are appropriating this traditional custom of elaborate braided / beaded hair and now using this as a form of self expression and self awareness, for us it shows how this hair culture is now being used as a vehicle to preserve culture and to reinvent tradition in a contemporary way. Azania is a collection that celebrates Africa and the crowns (our hair) that we wear with pride.
